  • Youn was born to Asian-American parents hailing from Korea. 
  • His father was the eldest of nine children. He grew up on a rice farm in rural Korea.
  • Just after Youn was born, his father decided that he would become a doctor after growing up.
  • He grew up in Greenville, Michigan.

  • Later, he lived in Kalamazoo, East Lansing, Grand Rapids, Los Angeles, Rochester, and Birmingham in Michigan.
  • He learned karate as a kid and advanced to the yellow belt before quitting the martial arts. 
     
  • He had an unattractive appearance during his high school and college days. On his official website, he said,

Growing up I always felt different from others and unattractive. I was skinny, wore huge, thick glasses, had braces, and worst of all a jaw that grew to enormous proportions. I remember having crushes on so many girls, and each one either laughed me off or told me that she wasn’t looking for a boyfriend right now. And invariably a week or two later she would be dating someone else. Someone better looking than me."

  • Many would tease him calling “Twinkie” or “Banana.”
  • Hence, from an early age, he understood the importance of appearance and how it can affect your self-esteem. 
  • In 1990, he scored the highest GPA in the history of Greenville Senior High School and graduated as the valedictorian.
  • After high school, he underwent surgery to set back his jaw. This surgery made him realize that one can control how one looks and feels about oneself.

  • During his residency, he started a three-person band called Migration, which mostly played bar tunes by Jimmy Buffett, Tom Petty, and BNL. Migration performed over 50 shows throughout the Lake Michigan area. Back then, it was even represented by an agent Don Middlebrook.

  • In LA, he joined Dr. Steven Svehlak and Dolla E Gomez to form a musical trio they called STD (Steve, Tony, Dolla). 
  • He determined to become a plastic surgeon in the fourth year of his medical school. He came across a child who critically injured her face in a wild animal attack. He was impressed by how the plastic surgeons corrected her face and decided to pursue the field. 
  • Anthony Youn met Amy while attending medical school in 1995. 
  • He graduated from medical school in 1998.

  • Then, he pursued a general surgery residency program at Grand Rapids Medical Education and Research Center. 
  • He did a two-year plastic surgery residency with Grand Rapids Medical Education and Research Center (MERC, formerly GRAMEC).
  • After that, he moved to Los Angeles for a one-year Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Fellowship at the Ellenbogen Plastic Surgery Institute with Dr. Richard Ellenbogen.
  • In 2004, while pursuing his plastic surgery fellowship in Los Angeles, Youn came into the spotlight when he appeared on the American reality television series Dr. 90210, along with his mentor.
  • In the same year, he returned to Michigan and opened his own practice, Youn Plastic Surgery.
  • Soon, he made a name for himself as one of the best plastic surgeons in Michigan with patients flying in from all over the country to have facelifts, tummy tucks, breast lifts, and eyelid lifts.
     
  • A turning point came in Youn's career when one of his patients, a sixty-year-old woman named Sherry, suffered a disastrous complication following a facelift. Three days after her surgery Sherry went out for a run against Youn's recommendations. An hour after the run, her neck and face started filling up with blood and she was rushed to the hospital. Although Sherry was fine in the end, the incident led Youn to question his practice. 
  • After years of research, he came up with the concept of Holistic Plastic Surgery, an approach that focuses on the root cause of aging and cosmetic problems. It aims to slow down the aging process and enhance natural beauty.
